How Yoria's Memory Works

How Yoria's Memory Works

The most deflating moment in AI chat: you talked for hours yesterday, and today you get the polite-stranger treatment. Yoria treats this "forgetting problem" as its core product challenge. Here's how the memory actually works — honestly.

Why ordinary AI forgets

The brain of a chat AI (a large language model) stores nothing. Every reply is "here's the conversation so far, write what comes next" — and there's a hard limit on how much can be passed in. Without extra machinery, older conversation simply falls off the edge. That's all "forgetting" is.

Yoria's approach: distill the conversation

Instead of hauling the raw log around, Yoria distills memories:

  1. Extract — pick out what's worth keeping: your preferences, things that happened, promises you made.
  2. Store — accumulate them as long-term memory per character. Closing the app changes nothing.
  3. Inject — before each reply, hand the relevant memories back to the character. That's how "hey, how did that thing go?" works weeks later.
  4. Edit — and this matters: you can see the memory list and fix it yourself. When the AI misremembers, you have the pen.

Memory flows beyond chat, too. Step away for a day or more and a character may write you a letter — woven from details of conversations days past.

Honestly: the limits

  • Not every line survives. Distillation means selection; if something important was missed, add it on the memory screen.
  • Misremembering isn't zero. Extraction is AI work too, so nuance can drift (that's what editing is for).
  • Memory isn't understanding. It creates continuity in a relationship — it isn't human comprehension.

How to grow a better memory

Concrete beats vague. "Rough day" gives memory little to hold; "the presentation ran long, and Sam bailed me out" gives it hooks that resurface later.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see what the AI remembers?

Yes. Each character's memories are listed in the app, and you can edit or delete anything it got wrong.

Do memories disappear when I close the app?

No. Memories persist across sessions — come back weeks later and the relationship picks up where it left off.

Does it remember everything I say?

No. Conversations are distilled, so not every line is kept. If something important was missed, you can add it yourself on the memory screen.
